Washington Monument

One of the most iconic monuments in the city, the Washington Monument stands an impressive 555 feet tall. The monument was built to commemorate George Washington, the first American president. Built of marble and granite, it is the world's tallest stone structure and the world's tallest obelisk. The monument was designed by Robert Mills, a highly respected architect of his time. Construction began in 1848 and after several long delays was completed in 1884. When completed, the Washington Monument was the world's tallest structure. Today it is one of the most visited monuments in the United States. Visitors are able to enter the monument and ride an elevator to a viewing area 500 feet high. The viewing area provides sweeping views of the city and great photo opportunities.
